What is a Camphill community?

The Camphill movement owes its name to the estate of Camphill in Scotland. This estate was given to this new enterprise by the parents of a handicapped child.

The Austrian doctor Karl König, who fled to Scotland in 1938 after the Anschluss, took up residence there in 1940 with his family, a group of fellow refugees and a number of handicapped children.

They lived and worked together in Camphill House on the basis of Rudolf Steiner's anthroposophy, thus laying the foundations for the development of the Camphill Community. There are now more than 90 Camphill communities, spread all over the world, four of them in the Netherlands
